Enjoy a weekend to the Sierra Nevada Range. For either the beginner or advanced photographer. Become a better and more competent photographer. Learn about landscape photography and how to photograph stars at night.

Many people think the Alabama Hills are in Alabama. They are not!

The eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Range , California, is a great destination for photographers.  Between the steep, eastern escarpment of the Sierra and the town of Lone Pine, are the Alabama Hills. Boulders the size of buildings lie scattered across the hills creating a highly textured foreground of smooth and rounded shapes with a dramatic view of the rising Sierra peaks above. Experienced landscape photographers will quickly see the possibilities.

This workshop will be very informal and fun. You will get plenty of wonderful photographs. We will have discussions about techniques and creativity each day. This trip is about shooting — lots of shooting. We will work closely together, sharing our knowledge and experience. Feel free to bring samples of your photography for review, as the goal of this workshop is to have fun and become a better and more competent photographer.

You will drive your own vehicle to Lone Pine which is 215 miles or 4 hours driving from Los Angeles. The workshop will begin at 12 noon on Saturday. We will be staying at the Dow Villa Motel in Lone Pine. You can look out your window to see a great view of Mt Whitney. It runs about $100 per night.

We will meet at 12 noon for a light meal before heading to the Alabama Hills to do our first shooting and discuss composition and light. Later that afternoon, we will drive up the Mt. Whitney Portals Road to the trailhead of Mt. Whitney to photograph the waterfalls. We will head back down to Lone Pine and eat dinner before we can try some "painting with light" and star photography after dark.

On Sunday, we will begin by doing a sunrise shoot over the Alabama Hills. When the sun first rises over the Inyo Mountains, it strikes the peaks of the Sierra. A few minutes later, it lights up the tops of the Alabama Hills, then works its way down to illuminate the foreground. We will be located in a good spot with a dynamic arrangement of the foreground–the jumble of the Alabama Hills–and the majestic peaks rising 10,000 feet above. We also will photograph the arches shown in these photos.

After a sunrise and a full morning of photography, we will drive back into Lone Pine for a meal. The workshop officially concludes after we eat, giving everyone plenty of time to drive home. However, for those that will be driving south, please join us for a drive up to Horseshoe Meadows (at nearly 11,000 feet! http://digital-desert.com/route-guide/route-04.html ) where we photograph fantastic gnarly trees and majestic viewpoints.

The Alabama Hills Workshop will be limited to 12 people. There will be no serious hiking but sturdy shoes are recommended because of the rocky terrain.
