California Photography Workshops

NIGHT IN THE ALABAMA HILLS, CALIFORNIA  - JUNE 3,4,5 - 2016

Enjoy a weekend to the Sierra Nevada Range photographing the star lit landscapes of the Alabama Hills and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

This workshop will be mainly about photographing the night sky. June is a great time to see the Milky Way and we will have moonless nights. We will be out creating compositions using the Milky Way as our guide. The prime time for shooting will be between 10pm and 12 midnight.

We will discuss the best shooting techniques, the “600” rule, focusing at night, camera noise, and more. We will also try some light painting.

The eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Range is a great destination for photographers.  Between the steep, eastern escarpment of the Sierra and the town of Lone Pine, are the Alabama Hills. Boulders the size of buildings lie scattered across the hills creating a highly textured foreground of smooth and rounded shapes with a dramatic view of the rising Sierra peaks above. Photographers will quickly see the possibilities.

This workshop will be very informal and fun. You will get plenty of opportunities to take a variety of photographs. We will have discussions about techniques and creativity each day.

The Alabama Hills - Lone Pine is 215 miles from Los Angeles. We will be staying at the Dow Villa Motel or another of your choice in Lone Pine. You can look out your window to see a great view of Mt Whitney.

We will meet on Friday, 4 pm at the Dow Villa Motel. We will do some shooting that night and a sunrise shoot the next morning. Sunset is 8:00PM, Sunrise at 5:30AM.

The workshop will wrap up by 1 pm on Sunday.

The Alabama Hills Workshop will be limited to 10 people. There will be no serious hiking but sturdy shoes are recommended because of the rocky terrain. The altitude at Whitney Portal is 8,360’. Lone Pine is 3,727’.
