Photographer Annie Leibovitz was quoted as having the uncanny ability “to make boring white men who have desk jobs look epic.”
Unless you are a fashion or celebrity photographer, most of the portraits we shoot are of everyday people. Whether you are shooting professionally or otherwise, this can be difficult because your subjects are not used to being in front of a camera.
An old adage said “when shooting in available light, make some light available”.
A better idea is to learn how to use available light to your advantage and to recognize when supplemental light is needed.
This practical hands-on workshop on location portraiture will give the participant the tools needed to successfully photograph people in their natural environment in any given location.
One of the things you will learn is how to put your subject at ease. Posing will also be stressed.
You will get lighting demonstrations using a variety of lighting sources including small remote flashes, reflectors, diffusors, and scrims. Emphasis will also be on learning to place your subject in such a place to take advantage of natural light. We will practice shooting in open sunlight, shade and indoors with mixed lighting.
After the demonstrations, you will practice some of these skills with two “regular” male or female models in a urban location in Los Angeles. They will be photographed individually and together. The workshop will begin at 10 AM and will be completed by sunset.
